2017 Project Linus Blanket Donation Drive

If you’ve been a long-time customer of Discount Fabric Warehouse, you may know that our Hilo and Kona stores are donation drop-off locations for Project Linus. Our 2017 Donation Drive is set to kick off later this month, so we thought we’d give you some heads up about what we have planned this year so you can get ready.

What is Project Linus?

Project Linus is a volunteer organization that provides handmade blankets to children in need.  The Big Island chapter is headquartered in Hilo.  To date, we’ve donated about 5000 blankets around the state. Donor sites vary, all blankets go to keiki on the Big Island. Child Welfare Services, hospitals in Hilo and Kona, and the Salvation Army are just a few of the agencies who distribute Project Linus blankets. (excerpt from Project Linus)

How Can I Help?

This year, there are four ways that you are able to help Project Linus on the Big Island:

Make a Blanket

Are you crafty? Do you have some spare time that you couldn’t mind spending on making a blanket for donation? Blankets of all sizes are always welcome. Standard size is 40 inches by 60 inches.  Bigger blankets, up to twin bed size, are great as well, but no smaller than one yard square (36in x 36in), please.

All Project Linus blankets must be new (not previously used), handmade (quilted, sewn, knitted, crocheted, or no-sew fringed fleece), high quality construction, machine washable and dry-able, and kid friendly.  This means bright, cheerful colors!  Remember our blankets go to both boys and girls, of all ages.  Blankets must be free of pet hair, smoke smells or other strong smells.  Also, please make sure no pins have been left in the blankets! (excerpt from Project Linus)

Blankets can be dropped off at Discount Fabric Warehouse in Hilo and in Kona. From Sunday, August 27, 2017 through Saturday, October 28, 2017, donate a completed blanket and receive a $5 gift card from Discount Fabric Warehouse! (Limit one gift card per person. There is no limit on how many blankets you can donate.)

Donate Fabric or Supplies for Blankets

Have some extra fabric from a project? Cleaning out your fabric stash and come across some yardage that you’re not planning on using for something? Maybe you have a friend who is cleaning out their craft room and have skeins of yarn that would be perfect for blankets! Project Linus is more than happy to help take them off your hands!

Here are some of the things they’re always on the lookout for:

  • Fabric – machine washable and dry-able in bright, cheerful solids and kid friendly prints.  Cotton, poly-cotton blends, and flannel are best.  One yard pieces or larger only, please.
  • Fleece – also called “polar fleece”.  A yard and a half of 45 inch wide fleece makes a great no-sew fringed blanket. Our blanketeers will cut and fringe if you bring the fleece!
  • Yarn – machine washable and dryable acrylics in any weight (e.g. Red Heart, Bernat Baby).  Again – bright and cheerful kid colors, solid or varigated.  Blanketeers will knit or crochet into blankets.
  • Crocheted or knitted squares, any size – as long as they are machine washable and dryable, we can put a blanket together.

Make a Monetary Donation

As with any organization, monetary donations are always welcome. Money is used to pay chapter expenses and to purchase supplies when needed.

If you’d like to make a monetary donation, you can do so through check (made out to Project Linus) or online at projectlinus.org

You can also make a donation of a Discount Fabric Warehouse gift card if you so choose so that you know the funds are going directly to purchasing supplies. Just let the cashier know that you’re donating to Project Linus.

Attend a Blanket Making Party

The Hilo and Kona stores are in the midst of planning blanket making parties where you can join Blanketeers (volunteers who regularly make and donate blankets to Project Linus) to make blankets! Dates are coming soon! This is going to be a fun event where you’ll spend some time making a blanket and then donating it to Project Linus. (Unfortunately, any blankets made and donated during the event will not be eligible for the $5 gift card.)

Check back soon or watch our weekly E-Blasts and Social Media pages to learn when our Blanket Making Parties have been scheduled!
