23rd Anniversary | Discount Fabric Warehouse

Celebrate Our DFW 23rd Anniversary With Us!

23 years ago, we opened our first Discount Fabric Warehouse store! We can’t believe 23 years has gone by so fast! And over the years, we’ve met so many different people, made so many friends, and (we hope) have made a positive impact on the Hawaii sewing community.

We’d like to invite you to join us in celebrating our 23rd anniversary!

Check Out Our Sales and Specials

We will be having sales and specials throughout the two weeks of our anniversary celebration. You can find all of these sales in-store or in your local newspaper.

Come Party With Us!

The Details

The main event of our anniversary celebration is always our VIC Members-Only anniversary party. This year, we’ll be having it on Friday, June 22, 2018 from 4PM – 8PM. (Our stores will all be closing at 3PM so we can get the store party-ready. No one will be allowed in until we reopen at 4PM, so please plan accordingly.)

Audience Participation (Plus Our Theme!)

One of the best things about our anniversary celebrations is that they’re themed! Last year, for our 22nd anniversary, we had a tutu (2-2 or two-two) theme. We encourage all of our customers to dress up and get in the spirit of things!

This year, our theme is 23 and Us. Why? Because human beings (typically) have 23 pairs of chromosomes in their cells. These chromosomes are made of DNA and our DNA can tell a lot about us – including ancestry. Hawaii is a melting pot of cultures and ethnic backgrounds. And the different combinations of these backgrounds are what makes each and every one of our customers special.

So this year we’re celebrating cultures, thus our theme – 23 and Us:  Celebrating Sewing Around the World. We encourage you to dress in an outfit that represents an ethnicity that you’d like to honor. We ask that you keep all costumes respectful and reserve the right to ask anyone who may be dressed in an offensive way to please leave the party. Please keep in mind that there is a very good chance that someone at the party may be of the ethnic background you are representing. If you have any questions or concerns regarding an outfit or would like more clarification on what may constitute as offensive or inappropriate, please contact us at prior to the party.

The Return of the Photo Booth (And Prize Drawing)

As we have in previous years, we will be having a photo booth at each of our stores. Please stop by, have your picture taken, and, if you are not a frequent customer of ours, make sure that we have your name and e-mail address so that you can be entered into our anniversary drawing for one of 23 amazing prizes (including, but not limited to, a $100 gift card, a Baby Lock steamer, or a Baby Lock dress form)! You can also take your own photo in our photo booth and upload it to Facebook or Instagram. To be entered in the drawing, you must tag us and use the hashtag #dfw23andus. Photos must be taken at the anniversary party to be entered. More information can be obtained at the party.

Passport of Savings & Refreshments

All customers who attend the party will receive a special one-night only Passport of Savings. This outlines all of the sales and specials we will have during the party. (Please note that these specials are exclusive from the specials we will be having in the newspapers and cannot be combined with any other offer.) These specials may or may not be similar to those we have had in previous years (although I can tell you that we have changed quite a bit – and no, thread will not be on major sale that night). You’ll have to come in to find out what they are.

There will also be light refreshments (while supplies last) at each party.

Want more info? Need more info? This page will be updated as the week goes on. To be the first to see all of sneak peeks and to get the most recent information, sign up for our E-Blast newsletter (if you haven’t already) through the link at the top of the site.

General questions about the party can be sent to We will not answer questions about what will be on sale or what the additional prizes for the drawing will be.

Invite a friend, invite ten friends! The more the merrier! But if they are not VIC members, to take advantage of any of the specials and sales, they will need to sign up for the free membership.

See you there!

Aloha Care Bags | Discount Fabric Warehouse

DFW Hilo: Aloha Care Bags All-Year Round!

When children are entering foster care or are transitioning from one home to another, they are usually given a trash bag to put their belongings in. According to the Friends of the Children’s Justice Center of East Hawaii, children are taken from their homes and placed into foster care for their immediate safety, at no fault of their own, and often remain in care until they become adults. They frequently change foster homes, and when moving, take none of their belongings, or the little that they have is placed into trash bags. Already experiencing sadness, trauma, and anxiety, children relate themselves to trash, like their belongings that are so frequently thrown into trash bags. Jade, a former foster youth, shared that it was hurtful and “it made me feel like I was the trash being carried around”. Kekoa, another former foster youth, agreed with Jade, and supports the idea of every foster child having their own duffel bag. Kekoa stated ”it’s the little things that make the biggest difference”.

Not only are these duffle bags practical, but they also convey the message that the child is valued. We plan on including a label in each of the bags with a message of hope and inspiration from former foster kids to the bag recipient.

While our Bags of Hope project has ended, we are looking to continue spreading the Aloha at our Hilo store by creating an Aloha Care Bag Ohana. This would be a group of talented sewist who would love to share their sills to become part of an ongoing group to make duffle bags, comfort pillows (travel pillows) and luggage tags to create Aloha Care Bags for foster children in East Hawaii.
Bags can be made both at home and/or in our sewing room with other members of our Aloha Care Bag Ohana.
All levels of sewing skills welcome – as long as you can sew a straight stitch and stuff a pillow, we need you!
Learn a new skill and help a foster child! You might even find a new passion in sewing duffel bags!
So what can you expect at these Aloha Care Bag Ohana meetings? We provide all materials for you to use in
your duffel bags (or other large bags) as well as pillows and tags that you’ll also be donating to the project.
We’re also looking at having Guest Bag Experts showing new and different bag designs, so not only will you
get to hone your skills with bags you already know, but you’ll also learn how to create new styles of bags and
add new sewing techniques to you repertoire.

The first meeting of the Aloha Care Bag Ohana has been scheduled for August 18, 2018 at 1PM. Please tell your friends and others who may be interested in coming to see what it’s all about!

You can also e-mail us at or give us a call at the Hilo store at (808) 935-1234 for more information. Thank you for helping us draw the line and say that we’re not going to let foster children feel like trash ever again.

Need a duffle bag pattern? Here’s one created by Jessie. You can download it here: Bag of Hope.
Dress A Child | Discount Fabric Warehouse

Help Dress A Child Around The Island and Around the World This May!

During the month of May, Discount Fabric Warehouse has teamed up with Dress A Girl Around the World and various local charities to help dress children in need in our community and around the world.

Dress A Girl Around the World believes that “every girl deserves at least one dress” and strives to distribute new, homemade dresses to girls in need all over the world. Many of these girls live in areas where they may never have a new dress of their own and Dress A Girl has the vision that every girl has at least one new dress. To find out more about Dress A Girl Around the World and see how you can help them directly, please visit our Dress A Girl page here.

Here in the islands, there is a need for basic clothing (simple shorts, tops, and girl’s dresses) for children of all ages. As always, each of the stores will be working with different charities in their communities to distribute donated items to those in need.

The Hilo and Kona stores will be working with the Friends of the Children’s Justice Center and HOPE Services Hawaii. The Friends of the Children’s Justice Center maintains a closet where children who are removed from situations with only the clothes on their backs are able to find new and gently used clothing. HOPE Services Hawaii distributes new and gently used clothing to children in need. Many of the families helped only have what is on their backs or in their cars and starting over.

As Maui and Kauai settle on their charities, we will update you.

Join us throughout the month of May and learn how to make simple children’s clothing using materials provided by us at one of our workshops. Dates and times will be available soon. You can also drop off any new handmade article of children’s clothing (ages 3 – 16) and receive a $5.00 gift certificate (limit one gift certificate per person, offer ends 05/31) and we will make sure your made with love item is donated to the appropriate organization.

One Million Pillowcase Challenge | Discount Fabric Warehouse

We’re Sewing Pillowcases for Charity!

Discount Fabric Warehouse is participating in the American Patchwork & Quilting One Million Pillowcase Challenge! Throughout the month of April, we’re collecting completed pillowcases and hosting sewing events where you can stop in and make a pillowcase!

•What is the One Million Pillowcase Challenge?•

American Patchwork & Quilting has challenged quliters, sewers, and crafters to help them reach their goal of donating one million pillowcases to local charities. While there is no set time frame to help them do so, we at Discount Fabric Warehouse have chosen April to focus on this amazing event.

•How Can I Participate?•

There are several ways that you can help us help others!

~ Donate completed pillowcases to your local Discount Fabric Warehouse store! We ask that pillowcases are kept about the standard size (22 inches by 32 inches) although we can take larger to fit king size pillows.

~ Donate fabric for others to make pillowcases! The minimum length of fabric we can accept is 1/4 of a yard. Anything smaller will be too small to use.

~ Join us at Discount Fabric Warehouse at one of our in-store events to help make pillowcases for donation! On Saturday, April 14, all of our Discount Fabric Warehouse stores will be hosting pillowcase making events! Times vary by store, but we will provide all materials – including a serger to use to help make putting together the pillowcases a breeze – as well as tutorials on how to make the pillowcases.

Hilo – April 14, 2018 – 10AM – 1PM
Kauai – April 14, 2018 – 10AM – 1PM
Kona – April 14, 2018 – 2PM – 4PM
Maui – April 11, 14, 18, 27, & 30, 2018 – 10:30AM

•Where Will the Pillowcases Be Donated?•

The Big Island stores (Hilo and Kona) will be donating their completed pillowcases to the Friends of the Children’s Justice Center and Hope Services Hawaii.

Kauai has chosen the local women’s shelter as the recipient of their pillowcases.

Maui’s pillowcases will be donated to the Children’s Justice Center on Maui.

More information on each of these organizations is coming soon. You can also contact the individual stores to speak to them regarding the charities chosen.

If you have any questions regarding our pillowcase challenge, please e-mail us at

Quilts for Charity | Discount Fabric Warehouse

Sew A Quilt For Charity!

March is National Quilt Month and what better way to celebrate than to use your skills and talents to help others? All of our stores will be collecting handmade quilts (new or like new) for donation to organizations within our communities.
Ways You Can Help:
*  Donate a hand crafted quilt (and receive a $5 gift card for doing so – limit 5 gift cards per person)
*  Come sew a quilt with us at one of our in-store quilting events and learn a new technique (or practice one you already know) – dates for all stores coming soon!
*  Drop off cotton fabric or batting at one of our stores and local quilt groups will make the donations into quilts.
Please keep in mind that this is a QUILT drive, not a BLANKET drive. Fleece tied blankets and the like will not be accepted, however if you’d like to donate them, we can pass them on to organizations like Project Linus. Blankets will not be eligible for the $5 gift cards.

*  No store bought quilts will be accepted. The purpose of this is not only to donate quilts, but to share the love and care that goes into making each quilt.
*  Lap quilts to queen-size quilts are welcome, with twin bed-sized quilts being needed.
*  Have handmade quilts in your stash that you just made for fun or didn’t quite work out as planned but are still completely useable? Why not donate them? They’ll be loved by anyone who receives them!

Charities We’ve Chosen:

Hilo & Kona – The Hilo and Kona stores will be donating all quilts to Hope Services Hawaii, who will be distributing the quilts to newly placed, formerly homeless families, and to the Children’s Justice Center, who will be giving the quilts to displaced/abused children.
For more information on Hope Services Hawaii, please click here. For the Children’s Justice Center, please click here.
