Bernina Has Arrived in Hilo!

Hilo folks, you can now purchase Bernina machines at your Hilo Discount Fabric Warehouse store!

Previously, these amazing machines were only available at the Kona DFW location, but now they’ve made the trek over to the other side of the island!

Come in today and let us show you what these machines can do!

You Won’t Want To Miss Our Hilo Bulk Sale!

It’s that time of year again! We’re having our Discount Fabric Warehouse Bulk Sale! The sale takes place at our Hilo warehouse, so make your plans now to join us!

Once a year, for the past 10 years, we have opened up the “district” warehouse that is normally closed to the public for a Huge One Day Bulk sale. This sale takes us a week to prepare and two days to clean up after, so it’s not a small feat for us to be able to do this. Because the event takes so much prep and clean up time, we initially decided that last year was to be the last. However, so many of you took the time, both at last year’s warehouse sale and online after the event, to thank us for having the sale and share with us what it has grown to mean to some of you. Many talked about how the ability to save 50% and more made the difference between their company being profitable or not, how they saved all year to buy the bulk of their supplies at this one day sale. Some really enjoyed finding “treasures” that are not in the stores. Many liked the strange, unpredictable things that show up at these sales (those who have been regulars in the past know what I am talking about..anything from inlaid wooden boxes to antique Kimonos to candles could show up at this sale).
So we will try this one more time! Saturday, October 24, from 8:30a.m. – 5:30p.m. we will have a BULK warehouse sale in the warehouse located directly across from the entrance to the Hilo store.
This sale is not for everyone. Fabrics will be sold with a minimum of a 5 yard cut, or, in some cases, by the full bolt or roll. So unfortunately, if you can’t use 5 yards of a fabric this probably isn’t the sale for you. But if you are searching for a larger amount of fabric, we will have tons for fabric at 50% off regular price: cottons blends, batiks, satins, canvas, muslin, head liner, home decor including tropical, pre-quilted Hawaiian prints, bulk manufacturers notions, a huge selection of patterns for only $1 ea, and tons more!
(And a special note to those of you flying in — show me your plane ticket at the sale and get a special free gift!)
If you’d like more information on our Bulk Sale, please contact the Hilo store or send us an e-mail at fabricdfw@gotfabric.com.
See you there!

This fabulous machine is the stuff dreams are made of! Designed for sewers by sewers, the Designer EPIC is packed full of features that any hardcore sewing enthusiast would be thrilled to have. One of the most amazing things is that the EPIC has a tablet-like interface, which means a big touch screen and lots of flexibility. Zoom in, zoom out, swipe, move things around, just like you would with any other tablet.

Here are just some of the features that are showcased by the Designer EPIC:

  • Built-in tutorials – With an enhanced JoyOS advisor feature, there are 120 built in tutorials that take you step by step with illustrations and animations.
  • mySewMonitor app – Working on a project and need to step away for a bit? With the mySewMonitor app, you’ll get alerts for things like when it’s time to change the thread or when your embroidery is completed. That way, you can do other things while working on your project! Multi-tasking at its best!
  • mySewnet cloud – With the cloud, you can create, store, and access your designs from anywhere! Great for those who are on the go and suddenly come up with a great idea.
  • Large work surface – The Designer EPIC features over 5.5 inches of height and 12.2 inches from needle to arm!!

Want to know more about this amazing top-of-the-line machine? Visit the Husqvarna Viking Designer EPIC website and then drop in to any of the Discount Fabric Warehouse locations to take a closer look and give your new favorite machine a test drive!

Discount Fabric Warehouse | Project Linus

DFW Hilo: Project Linus

What is Project Linus?

Project Linus is a nation-wide non-profit organization that provides handmade blankets to children in need. The organization services all 50 states and we are fortunate to have two chapters here in the state of Hawaii. There is a Hawaii Chapter as well as an Oahu Chapter. Unfortunately, at this time, no other chapters have been formed for the other islands.

According to the Project Linus national website, there are two missions that the organization believes in:

First – Provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer “blanketeers.”

Second – Provide a rewarding and fun service opportunity for interested individuals and groups in local communities, for the benefit of children.

The Hawaii Chapter has distributed blankets to organizations all over the island, including Hilo Medical Center, Hospice of Hilo, and Child and Family Services, just to name a few, as well as several organizations on the west side of the island.

So how can you help Project Linus?

You can help Project Linus by donating a completed, homemade blanket. For those of you on the Big Island, if you donate a blanket (or more!) you will receive a $5 gift card for your contribution. Although there is no limit on the number of blankets you can donate, there is a limit of 1 gift card per person.

Any blankets that are donated must be new (not previously used), handmade (quilted, sewn, knitted, crocheted, or no-sew fringed fleece), high quality construction, machine washable and dryable, and kid friendly.  This means bright, cheerful colors!  Remember our blankets go to both boys and girls, of all ages.  Blankets must be free of pet hair, smoke smells or other strong smells.  Also, please make sure no pins have been left in the blankets! (This is from the Project Linus Hawaii Chapter website.) And although there is a need for blankets of all sizes, they can be no smaller than one yard square (36″x36″).

Don’t worry if you can’t make the blanket drive! You can drop off a blanket for Project Linus any time of the year at our Discount Fabric Warehouse Hilo and Kona locations! Just make sure you let the sales staff know that it’s for Project Linus. They’ll know what to do from there!

Another way you can help is by donating your time. Project Linus holds monthly Blanketeering sessions at Discount Fabric Warehouse – Hilo. The date is advertised in the Hawaii Tribune-Herald as well as on the Hawaii Chapter website. The Hilo Chapter is also looking for volunteers to help with their blanket drive. You can contact the Chapter Coordinator, Kathleen Stacey, by e-mail at project.linus_hi@yahoo.com for more information on how you can get involved.

Next Monthly Get-Together:

Saturday, February 17, 2018

10AM – Noon

The final way that you can help Project Linus is by making a donation. It doesn’t have to be a blanket, they’re also accepting donations of supplies (fabric, batting, fleece, yarn and other supplies) as well as monetary donations.

Contact Project Linus

If you’d like more information on anything, such as more details on blankets they accept or how to make a donation, please contact the Project Linus Hawaii Chapter.

2015 Halloween Costume Contest!

Halloween is just around the corner and we at Discount Fabric Warehouse want to encourage you to start thinking about your costumes early by announcing our 2015 Halloween Costume Contest! So get those creative juices flowing!

Here’s the rundown:

There will be three (3) categories:  Keiki, Adult, and Pets. Now, that doesn’t mean that it’s kids costumes vs. adult costumes. We like to do things slightly different here at Discount Fabric.

The Keiki Category (up to 18 years old)

  • The child must help with the costume. That doesn’t mean that the adult can’t help, but the child needs to have helped with a minimum of 75% of the costume. (And by “help” we don’t mean that they hand you the pins or pick the color of the thread while you make the rest of the costume. We mean let THEM make the costume. You can help, but this needs to be their project.)
  • The costume must be homemade. While you can have ready-made elements, the bulk of the costume must be original and made by the entrant.
  • The costume must have elements of sewing, machine embroidery, or quilting.

The Adult Category

  • The costume must be homemade. While you can have ready-made elements, the bulk of the costume (at least 75%) must be original and made by the entrant.
  • The costume must have elements of sewing, machine embroidery, or quilting.

The Pets Category

  • The costume must be homemade. While you can have ready-made elements, the bulk of the costume (at least 75%) must be original.
  • The costume must have elements of sewing, machine embroidery, or quilting.
  • This category is open to interpretation. The pet in the picture must have contributed to the making of the costume. While we don’t expect you to teach your dog or cat how to sew (although that would be interesting) we do expect that your pet be involved in the creation of the costume.

You may enter more than one costume. We encourage it if you are making costumes for different people.

How To Enter

To enter the contest, you must submit the form that can be found on our Costume Contest Entry Form page. Our submission deadline has changed and submissions will now be accepted until 11:59p.m. on SATURDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2015. Voting will be done through the Discount Fabric Warehouse Facebook page from Sunday, November 01, 2015 through Wednesday, November 04, 2015.

The Prizes

There will be three places for each category:

  • 1st place will receive a Discount Fabric Warehouse gift certificate valued at $100
  • 2nd place will receive a Discount Fabric Warehouse gift certificate valued at $50
  • 3rd place will receive a Discount Fabric Warehouse gift certificate valued at $25

Gift certificates are only valid in our 4 Discount Fabric Warehouse locations and are not usable on Got Fabric, our online fabric store.

For more information, please visit our Terms and Conditions page.  You can also check out our FAQ page for some of the questions that have been asked. If you still have any questions, please e-mail us at fabricdfw@gotfabric.com with the subject “Halloween Costume Contest.”

Happy Sewing and Creating!
