Discount Fabric Warehouse | Project Linus Donation Drive 2017

2017 Project Linus Blanket Donation Drive

If you’ve been a long-time customer of Discount Fabric Warehouse, you may know that our Hilo and Kona stores are donation drop-off locations for Project Linus. Our 2017 Donation Drive is set to kick off later this month, so we thought we’d give you some heads up about what we have planned this year so you can get ready.

What is Project Linus?

Project Linus is a volunteer organization that provides handmade blankets to children in need.  The Big Island chapter is headquartered in Hilo.  To date, we’ve donated about 5000 blankets around the state. Donor sites vary, all blankets go to keiki on the Big Island. Child Welfare Services, hospitals in Hilo and Kona, and the Salvation Army are just a few of the agencies who distribute Project Linus blankets. (excerpt from Project Linus)

How Can I Help?

This year, there are four ways that you are able to help Project Linus on the Big Island:

Make a Blanket

Are you crafty? Do you have some spare time that you couldn’t mind spending on making a blanket for donation? Blankets of all sizes are always welcome. Standard size is 40 inches by 60 inches.  Bigger blankets, up to twin bed size, are great as well, but no smaller than one yard square (36in x 36in), please.

All Project Linus blankets must be new (not previously used), handmade (quilted, sewn, knitted, crocheted, or no-sew fringed fleece), high quality construction, machine washable and dry-able, and kid friendly.  This means bright, cheerful colors!  Remember our blankets go to both boys and girls, of all ages.  Blankets must be free of pet hair, smoke smells or other strong smells.  Also, please make sure no pins have been left in the blankets! (excerpt from Project Linus)

Blankets can be dropped off at Discount Fabric Warehouse in Hilo and in Kona. From Sunday, August 27, 2017 through Saturday, October 28, 2017, donate a completed blanket and receive a $5 gift card from Discount Fabric Warehouse! (Limit one gift card per person. There is no limit on how many blankets you can donate.)

Donate Fabric or Supplies for Blankets

Have some extra fabric from a project? Cleaning out your fabric stash and come across some yardage that you’re not planning on using for something? Maybe you have a friend who is cleaning out their craft room and have skeins of yarn that would be perfect for blankets! Project Linus is more than happy to help take them off your hands!

Here are some of the things they’re always on the lookout for:

  • Fabric – machine washable and dry-able in bright, cheerful solids and kid friendly prints.  Cotton, poly-cotton blends, and flannel are best.  One yard pieces or larger only, please.
  • Fleece – also called “polar fleece”.  A yard and a half of 45 inch wide fleece makes a great no-sew fringed blanket. Our blanketeers will cut and fringe if you bring the fleece!
  • Yarn – machine washable and dryable acrylics in any weight (e.g. Red Heart, Bernat Baby).  Again – bright and cheerful kid colors, solid or varigated.  Blanketeers will knit or crochet into blankets.
  • Crocheted or knitted squares, any size – as long as they are machine washable and dryable, we can put a blanket together.

Make a Monetary Donation

As with any organization, monetary donations are always welcome. Money is used to pay chapter expenses and to purchase supplies when needed.

If you’d like to make a monetary donation, you can do so through check (made out to Project Linus) or online at projectlinus.org

You can also make a donation of a Discount Fabric Warehouse gift card if you so choose so that you know the funds are going directly to purchasing supplies. Just let the cashier know that you’re donating to Project Linus.

Attend a Blanket Making Party

The Hilo and Kona stores are in the midst of planning blanket making parties where you can join Blanketeers (volunteers who regularly make and donate blankets to Project Linus) to make blankets! Dates are coming soon! This is going to be a fun event where you’ll spend some time making a blanket and then donating it to Project Linus. (Unfortunately, any blankets made and donated during the event will not be eligible for the $5 gift card.)

Check back soon or watch our weekly E-Blasts and Social Media pages to learn when our Blanket Making Parties have been scheduled!

If you have any questions regarding Project Linus, please contact the Chapter Coordinator, Kathleen, at project.linus_hi@yahoo.com

For more information on dropping off a donation or how to donate, please contact the Hilo or Kona Discount Fabric Warehouse stores.

Discount Fabric Warehouse | 22nd Anniversary

Celebrate Our 22nd Anniversary With Us!

You’re invited to the party of the year! Discount Fabric Warehouse is celebrating our 22nd Anniversary and what’s an anniversary without a party?

When:  Sunday, June 25, 2017

Time:  2PM – 6PM

Where:  All of our Discount Fabric Warehouse locations! (Yes, even Maui!)

Hilo, Kona, and Kauai will be closing at 1PM to get party-ready by 2. And then, at 2PM, the doors will open at all four locations and the party will start!

What can you expect?

There will be store-wide sales and specials (it’s a wonderful time to stock up on things that you may need throughout the year at a great price!) along with a fun photo booth, refreshments (while supplies last), and much more! Come check out all of our staff members as they’ll be dressing up in their interpretation of the “2 2” theme!

We encourage you to dress up in your own take of the theme! Perhaps a ballerina (22 = tutu, get it?) or maybe a granny (“tutu” is a common way to say “granny” in Hawaii). Maybe a ballerina granny? Use your imagination!

We’re going to be sending out teasers in our special Anniversary E-Blasts and on our Facebook page this week, so make sure you check them out!

Teaser 1 (Sent 06/21) – 50% off All Carded Buttons

Teaser 2 (Found on Our Facebook Page on 06/23) – 50% off All Thread

Teaser 3 (Sent 06/24) – 50% off All Patterns (Regularly priced $5.00 and up! This includes Eastwind Art and Victoria Jones!)

Teaser 4 (Special!) – 22% off DIME Vintage Chic Embroidery Workshop registration! (Must come in to the party to get discount. Online registrations are regular price.)

What can you not expect?

Well, anniversary party crowds tend to be a bit larger than the traffic in our stores on normal days. If you’re planning on coming in to take advantage of the awesome sales to purchase materials to work on a project, you may want to do a bit of recon beforehand, finding the colors and fabrics you’ll need, so you’ll be ready when you come to the party. Or, bring a friend (or two) with you for second opinions. We may not have the staff on hand at your local DFW to help you match fabrics or colors that day.

You may also want to come in ahead of time and get pre-approved if you think you’ll be coming in to buy a machine and will need financing. This way, you’ll know whether or not you can afford the machine of your dreams.

Please don’t expect to go home without some amazing fabric! You’re sure to find some amazing deals on Sunday, so you may want to bring a big bag with you. 🙂

Win 1 of 22 Amazing Prizes!

First, you’re going to have to attend our anniversary party. It doesn’t matter which location you go to. But it’ll have to be one of the parties.
Second, strike a pose in the photo booth. This can be with your own camera, selfie style, or have a staff member take a photo of you (along with your family, friends, or whoever else you have with you!).
Third, upload your photo to Facebook or Instagram! Use the hashtag #dfw22 or tag Discount Fabric Warehouse so we can find your picture. You need to have the hashtag or have tagged us to be entered! (How else are we going to know you posted your picture?) This needs to be done by end of business day (so, for us 6PM) on Monday, June 26, 2017 to be eligible.
No Facebook or Instagram capabilities on your phone? Don’t worry! As long as one of our staff members has taken your picture using our photo equipment, and logged your name and contact info (phone number or e-mail address please!) we’ll be able to upload the photo for you so you’ll be entered!
22 random winners will be chosen from all of the entries! If you’ve won, you’ll be contacted within a week after the party!

While we can’t give all of the info away, make sure you’re signed up for our VIC program to get all of the sale prices at the party! This party is a VIC members only event, so to get the great deals, you’ll need to sign up. It’s totally free, but it does take a minute for us to input your information. If you’re already a VIC member – great! We’ll be sending out more info on our party in the upcoming E-Blasts! Soon after the Blasts are sent out, though, we’ll also be spreading the word on our social media as well as on this site!

Any questions? Feel free to contact us at fabricdfw@gotfabric.com or give any of our DFW stores a call!

See you there! We can’t wait to celebrate our 22nd Anniversary with you!

DIME Vintage Chic | Discount Fabric Warehouse

Go Vintage Chic with DIME and DFW!

Attention all machine embroidery enthusiasts! All of our Discount Fabric Warehouse locations will be offering a special workshop coming in July! We’ll be offering the DIME Vintage Chic event at each of our stores!

Join DIME (Designs in Machine Embroidery) educator, Ashley Jones, at your local Discount Fabric Warehouse store!

Vintage Chic combines the nostalgic look of hand embroidery but with today’s technology. It’s vintage like your great-grandmother’s hand stitched linens but it’s also relevant and popular for today’s fashions. You’ve seen the look at big box retailers— on men’s wear, apparel in bold colors, bright children’s wear, home décor & accessories and souvenirs.

Here are just some of the topics covered at this workshop:

• Hoop everything from a hat to a terrycloth towel
• Discover the industry’s preferred method of placement
• Measure and mark without leaving a trace
• Avoid misplaced embroidery like a pro
• Turn words into artwork
• Edit designs on the fly
• Multiply your stash
• Master continuous embroidery
• Unmask the secrets of embroidery on prints, nubby knits and
smooth satins
• Create bold topstitching
• Learn how to work with heavy thread and duplicate the
popular matte finish
• Create large designs with big impact – minimal color changes
mean fast stitching
• Textured patches just like Ready-Wear

The folks at DIME have been super amazing by tailoring the workshops to help Hawaii embroidery enthusiasts – whether you embroidery as a home business or just for fun – learn about their products through tropical and fun vintage designs! They’ve even written a blog post with more info on what types of projects you’ll be learning about! Click here to visit their blog!

4 hours of amazing embroidery education for only $29! Plus, you’ll get a free gift for registering and a goody bag at the event! (And, in true Discount Fabric Warehouse fashion, we’ll be providing light refreshments for those attending!) There are two sessions at each store for you to choose from!
